Introduction

Santa Barbara County is located on the Pacific coast of the southern portion of California, just west of Ventura County. The state government’s population bureau lists a January 1, 2006 estimate of 400,335. The county seat is Santa Barbara. Mission Santa Barbara was founded on December 4, 1786 in what is now Santa Barbara. The county derives its name from the mission. Santa Barbara County was one of the original counties 26 of California, formed in 1850 at the time of statehood.
