Introduction

The county seat of Sacramento County is the city of Sacramento, the state capital. The California State government’s population bureau lists a January 1, 2006 estimate of 1,374,724. Sacramento County covers about 994 square miles in the middle of the Central Valley, California’s prime agricultural region. Sacramento County was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood.

Sacramento County Office of Education - in collaboration with the Packard Foundation, First 5 Sacramento and other partner organizations in Sacramento - has emerged as a lead agency working to expand access to effective preschool programs for young children.
