Alameda
Introduction
Alameda County occupies most of the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. As of the 2000 census it had a population of 1,443,741 making it the 7th largest county in the state. The California State government’s population bureau lists a January 1, 2006 estimate of 1,457,426. Alameda County currently has the highest sales tax rate in California, which is 8.75%. Alameda County is a stronghold of the Democratic Party. It has not supported a Republican since Eisenhower’s victory in 1956.
Alameda County launched a comprehensive planning effort in January 2006 to address early care and education (ECE) for all children from birth to five years of age. The process was built on the work of many experts, including community and business stakeholders, early childhood practitioners and K-12 professionals. Led by County Superintendent of Schools Sheila Jordan, Assemblywoman Wilma Chan, the Child Care Planning Council, and First 5 Alameda County, the Alameda County Early Care and Education for All Plan was completed in November of 2006.
