California voters passed Proposition 10 in November 1998, creating a tobacco tax that provides funding to support the optimal development of children from conception through age five. This led to the creation of the Merced County Children and Families Commission, a local Commission of nine members overseeing the distribution of Proposition 10 funds throughout the county. The Commission’s vision is that all children in Merced County will thrive in supportive, loving and nurturing environments, enter school healthy and ready to learn and become productive, well adjusted members of society.
In July 2000, the Commission distributed funds made available as a result of Proposition 10 through the Request for Proposals process to organizations committed to joining the Commission in achieving desired results and outcomes. The following is a description of major projects currently funded over a three year period.
