The California Preschool Instructional Network was initiated, during the 2003-04 school year, by the California Department of Education (CDE) in partnership with the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA). Currently, the Child Development and Special Education Divisions of CDE provide funding to 11 county offices for the CCSESA regions, the Sacramento County Office of Education for the Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee of CCSESA, and the California Institute on Human Services at Sonoma State University. The initiative is focused on the educational component of preparing children aged three to five, including those with disabilities and those who are learning English, for success in elementary school and beyond by providing and/or supporting professional development for administrators and teachers of early childhood education/school readiness programs.
CDE funding provides for one primary Early Childhood Education Regional Lead, one part-time Special Education Lead and one part-time English Learner Lead located at county offices of education, in each of the 11 CCSESA regions in California. CPIN staff in each region has developed several structures to disseminate current research-based practices in areas that are important for all children to prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond.
