A Framework for Teaching English Learners

This publication focuses on some of the challenges and opportunities that educators face in trying to better serve English learners. A framework for teaching English learners is described that is a central component of a large-scale professional development initiative in New York City. The framework identifies instructional approaches that teachers can offer to help English learners excel. Another article describes effective strategies that have been implemented in Calexico, California. This district, where a majority of students are English learners, has recently made improvements reflected in dramatically rising academic achievement scores. An article describes information, strategies, and principles from a new resource by WestEd’s Center for Child and Family Studies for preschool teachers of English learners. Highlights are presented from a conversation with Robert Linquanti, a prominent West Ed expert on policies and practices for educating English learners.
